AMAZING!
What an amazing night! I have been to MANY concerts over the years...this performance is in my top 2. Rodrigo y Gabriela have extraordinary skills in their instrumental stories. The music of these gifted musicians burned across genres and expectations leaving the audience amazed and alive in the music. My family and I bonded with complete strangers over our amazement of the performance. The music coupled with the light show and the energy of the performers was a gift indeed! Thank you for giving my family and I this memorable night!
Electric Guitar Drowns out Beauty of the Music
Gabriela finally figured out that the people were there to appreciate the uniqueness that the two could bring - that is, their beautiful acoustic guitar sounds. The last 1/3 of the concert had the folks dancing in the isles. For half of the performance Rodrigo insisted on playing his electric guitar - with it's poor sound and it's relatively mediocre writing.
R&G concert review
They put on a good show, but the venue was so unorganized and poorly planned, that people that got there at 4:30 for Will Call ended up standing in the heat in a big field parking lot for 2 hours. They didn't open the gates the start letting people in until 530, but there were thousands of people to get in, so it was closer to 630 before everyone got through the gate. Little kids were standing out in that heat - it was ridiculous. They had just a couple of food trucks for thousands of people, and two bars to get drinks. The people directing the parking were pushing people in line aside to park cars where they were standing. Lots of very upset people. There was no way to tell exactly where you parked because they kept putting more cars in all around you so it was a complete cluster for those trying to find their cars in the dark - no lights in the field... just a lot of people setting of the alarms in the cars so they could try to find them in the dark. R&G didn't actually get started until maybe 745, so people were ready to go home by 9, while they were still playing- Sunday night, people have to work in the morning, and many families had kids that were expecting to be done much earlier. We will never go to another concert at Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. We spent $60 a ticket to stand in 95 degree heat for an hour and a half, wait for R&G to start way after we expected them to, and another 45 minutes walking around in the dark trying to find the car. Very disappointed. Would have asked for a refund, but it probably would have meant standing in another line for an hour. Sad, we decided to do this rather than Rockygrass this year - bad choice.
Disappointing then magical
We have seen R&G a bunch of times and they were always amazing. But this time The warmup act and first half of show was just a lot of disjointed noise and assaulting lights. Sound system was thin and was not equalized properly. Once they returned to their acoustic stuff the magic returned. So glad we did not walk out halfway through and hung in for the good stuff
Too Much Glitz/Glitter, Not Encough Acoustic
We arrived at 7:05 and were in our seats by 7:10. Great seats around the 8th row center. Their actual performance start was much later (due to a warm up performer). Lots of bright flashing lights, strobes, smoke and special icing and heavy on volume. I'd estimate that less than 20% of their performance was solely acoustical - and these parts were the best. He spent most of his energies on his hard electric guitar which frequently didn't complement her acoustic guitar, and his performance was ho-hum, that is, common & nothing really special. It was almost as if the two of them were in different places, playing different music, not insync with one another. You could be see and hear the audience rise to cheer and encourage them to play acoutical duets. Really a disappointing performance. I hope this is not their future direction. It's poor.
